USS CAPE (MSI-2) was designed as an inshore
minesweeper capable of sweeping mines in
very shallow water. Her capabilities were such that she could sweep
moored, magnetic and
acoustic mines equally as well as her bigger sisters the MSC's and MSO's.
The CAPE and her sister ship, USS COVE (MSI-1) were the only two inshore
minesweepers
built. They were developed experimentally to meet the needs of the
mine force. In the
event of a war time situation, more minesweepers would be needed. In
such an event,
civilian shipyards would be called upon to mass produce an economical
vessel that would
satisfactorily fill the requirements of minesweeping. |
